Report shows mental health not a marginal issue for the criminal justice system

A report examining the treatment of people with mental health issues across the criminal justice system has been published by Criminal Justice Inspection Northern Ireland.

The report has urged the various criminal justice agencies to work together to address the needs of individuals presenting with mental health difficulties who engage with the criminal justice system. And it has encouraged all criminal justice organisations to look at ways of developing its screening and assessment processes to identify at an early stage those who should be diverted away from the justice system and provided with suitable care in the most appropriate setting.
