Report on handling of domestic violence and abuse published

CJI has today publically reported on how domestic violence and abuse cases are handled by the criminal justice system. View report. View press release.

The inspection report examined the issue of domestic violence from the point at which an initial report was made through to its investigation, prosecution and court disposal.

 

Speaking following the publication of the report CJI's Chief Inspector Dr Michael Maguire indicated that domestic violence was a significant problem that can occur regardless of age, class, religion, gender, race, sexual group or sexual orientation.

 

He said that there had been improvements in the manner in which domestic violence and abuse incidents are handled by the criminal justice agencies in Northern Ireland and a growing recognition of the need to understand issues around domestic violence and abuse.

 

Dr Maguire however noted that more could be done to strengthen the way in which domestic violence and abuse incidents are dealt and as a result CJI's inspection report includes 13 recommendations for improvement.
