New report points way forward for future development of PPS

26/04/2013
An inspection of corporate governance within the PPS has found that sound structures are in place on which further improvements can be introduced to meet the  business and efficiency challenges now facing the organisation. View report page.

Inspectors found the PPS has made good headway since it was established in 2005 and has responded well to the challenges of an increased workload and the development of a regional structure.  Throughout this time it has delivered a very high quality of legal decision-making, but it now requires a fresh approach to improve service delivery and business outcomes.

"Inspectors found that Prosecutors received insufficient management training and not enough was being done to transition the tools of business to the legal environment.  Therefore the PPS needs to invest more in training its senior managers and to learn from the experience of prosecution services in England and Wales which have had to face similar challenges to those now confronting the PPS," said Brendan McGuigan, CJI's Chief Inspector.

"This report makes three strategic recommendations and identifies 11 areas for improvement, which if fully implemented will help the PPS take that next step towards its ultimate aim of providing a first class prosecution service," he concluded.
