Brendan McGuigan CJI's Chief Inspector stressed reducing the level of risk to the public and dealing with the cause of offending behaviour should be in central to the work of both organisations as they prepared offenders for their eventual release.

"We welcome the progress made with the opening Burren House as a step-down facility for prisoners in the last 15 months of their sentence but I am disappointed work to establish a more integrated psychology service has not been achieved by the Northern Ireland Prison Service and the Probation Board for Northern Ireland," he said.
