Independent Inspection can help address concerns on Community Based Resyorative Justice Schemes

The Chief Inspector of Criminal Justice in Northern Ireland, Kit Chivers, has said that he believes the independent inspection of community based restorative justice schemes can help address concerns regarding their future role.
Mr. Chivers made the comment as he responded to the publication of a revised protocol for the regulation of community-based restorative justice (CBRJ) schemes announced by Criminal Justice Minister, David Hanson MP, earlier today (Tuesday 25 July).
“The people of Northern Ireland need to be able to have confidence in their community-based restorative justice schemes and Criminal Justice Inspection (CJI) has known for some time that it could be called upon to provide independent, impartial inspection to ensure CBRJ schemes meet the standard required,” said Mr. Chivers.
“CJI will now await the outcome of the forthcoming 12 week consultation period before finalising its inspection proposals,” he concluded.
