STAKEHOLDER CONFERENCE 2008

STORMONT HOTEL, BELFAST,

THURSDAY 17 JANUARY

DEVOLUTION OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE IN NORTHERN IRELAND

Criminal Justice Inspection is to host its fifth annual Stakeholder Conference on Thursday 17 January 2008 at the Stormont Hotel, Belfast.

The conference, entitled D-Day for Criminal Justice, will look at the challenges the devolution of policing and criminal justice matters will present for local criminal justice agencies.

Kit Chivers addresses the 2007 Stakeholder Conference.

“This is a very exciting time for Northern Ireland and the impact of devolution and the challenges it will bring cannot be underestimated, especially in terms of budgets and increased accountability,” said CJI's Chief Inspector Kit Chivers.

“We hope our 2008 conference will provide a timely occasion to discuss these challenges, and to hear from others who have gone through the process about the experience of devolving criminal justice matters and the opportunities and difficulties it can present.

“Our 2007 Stakeholder Conference was a well attended event that attracted a number of high profile speakers and a wide range of delegates.  We hope to build upon the success of our last event and I look forward to extending a warm welcome to all our invited guests on 17 January 2008,” said Kit.

Kathy O'Toole, Garda Siochana Inspecorate, Kit Chivers, Paul Goggins MP, Minister of State and Sir Hugh Orde, PSNI Chief Constable at the 2007 Stakeholder 2007 conference.

The Stakeholder Conference will also provide CJI with an opportunity to consult stakeholders on its proposed inspection programme for 2008-09.

“The opportunity to speak to representatives of the various criminal justice agencies, voluntary and community groups, politicians and other individuals about our future work programme is something the Inspectorate finds incredibly valuable,” said Kit.

“It provides a chance to hear from others about the work and topics they feel we should be looking at which we can take forward, develop and include where possible in our Business Plan," he said.

Invitations to attend the one-day conference have been issued, and as numbers are restricted, delegates will be asked to indicate their wish to attend by returning their completed response form by Friday 14 December 2007.
