Criminal Justice Inspection Northern Ireland (CJI) has today (4 July 2024) published its Annual Report and Accounts for the financial year ending 31 March 2025.

The report, which was approved by the Northern Ireland Audit Office Comptroller and Auditor General , highlights the work undertaken by the Inspectorate during the last financial year.

“I am pleased that the Comptroller and Auditor General has issued a clean audit certificate and recorded that she had no observations to make in relation to CJI’s financial statements,” said James Corrigan, CJI’s Chief Executive and Accounting Officer.

“During the financial year we published seven Inspection Reports, one Ministerial Requested Review and one Follow-Up Review with a number of other reports at an advanced stage at year end. I am pleased that all CJI recommendations made during 2024-25, except one, were accepted and monitoring the implementation and progress of previous report recommendations continues.

“This Annual Report and Accounts shows CJI continues to maintain effective corporate governance arrangements, has been prudent in its budget management and has been focused on effectively mitigating risks that could impact the achievement of our business objectives.

“I am delighted to submit this report to the Northern Ireland Assembly, placing on record the valuable work carried out by CJI during the course of 2024-25 when we marked our 20th anniversary, demonstrating our continued commitment to securing a better justice system for all,” said Mr Corrigan.

CJI Chief Inspector Jacqui Durkin said: “This Annual Report and Accounts demonstrates another busy year for CJI that required flexible team resources and the careful management of our budget.

“During the year the Minister requested a Review of Multi Agency Review Arrangements, this together with the recurring annual Review of the effectiveness of the implementation of Part 1 of the Domestic Abuse and Civil Proceedings Act (Northern Ireland) 2021 requires significant CJI Inspector resource to deliver alongside other Inspection Programme priorities.

“Our work with partner Inspectorates, with their particular expertise, is critical to some of our Inspections, and I value our positive relationships and shared focus on improvement.

“I am very pleased that we were able to progress our new website this year; it is vital in publishing reports and communicating our work in a secure and accessible way.

“As ever, I am grateful to James, the Inspectors and Business Support Team for their continued professionalism and commitment to CJI’s delivery and effective governance,” said Ms Durkin.
