Criminal Justice Inspection pledges support for White Ribbon Charter

07/01/2020

Criminal Justice Inspection Northern Ireland’s Chief Inspector Jacqui Durkin and Deputy Chief Inspector James Corrigan have become the latest signatories of the Women’s Aid White Ribbon Charter.

"James and I were pleased to be invited to endorse the Charter and its message that violence against women should never be committed, condoned or allowed to continue because others remain silent,” said CJI’s Chief Inspector Jacqui Durkin.

“In 2019 CJI published the ‘No Excuse’ report which examined in detail how domestic violence and abuse is handled by the criminal justice system in Northern Ireland.  The report made a number of recommendations for improvement and called for further action to be taken including legislative change.

“I hope that 2020 will see real progress on the Inspection recommendations to deliver positive change for anyone who experiences domestic violence and abuse,” said Ms Durkin.

Kelly Andrews, Chief Executive Officer of Women’s Aid said: “Domestic abuse crimes accounted for 16% of all crime reported to the PSNI in 2018-19 with 31,682 domestic incidents reported during the financial year.
“It’s important we send a clear message that domestic violence will not be tolerated.

“We are delighted to have the Chief Inspector and Deputy Chief Inspector sign up to the pledge to never commit, condone or remain silent about domestic violence. We very much welcome the recommendations of the ‘No Excuse’ report that will deliver positive change for victims,” she concluded.
