An independent inspection of arrangements in place to support legacy inquests in Northern Ireland has found existing processes to be complex, convoluted and contributing to delay.

A new inspection report on Maghaberry Prison has found work to provide a safer, more stable environment for prisoners and staff at the high security facility is continuing, but issues remain around support for vulnerable prisoners and the availability and use of drugs.

Inspectors have commended the Northern Ireland Prison Service for delivering ‘significant improvements in outcomes’ for young men and women prisoners held in two of Northern Ireland's prison facilities.
