United Nations experts are preparing a report on detention after concluding a 12-day visit to the United Kingdom during which they visited a number of different locations and places of detention.

The visit by the influential UN Subcommittee for the Prevention of Torture (SPT) was triggered after concerns were raised by the UK’s national custody and detention watchdog network, the National Preventive Mechanism (NPM), about treatment and conditions in some areas of state detention and about the need for the network to be placed on a stronger statutory footing.

CJI is one of the designated UK NPM bodies which operate within Northern Ireland.

Further information on the visit which took place between 8-19 September 2019 and its initial findings can be found by following this link: OHCHR | UN torture prevention body concludes visit to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland
