Our Statutory Role
Who we work with and report to
Criminal Justice Inspection (CJI) has a skilled team of Inspectors with deep knowledge of Northern Ireland’s criminal justice system.
We also collaborate with oversight across the UK, Republic of Ireland, Europe, and beyond. These collaborations ensure access to specialist expertise, helping deliver thorough and high-quality inspections.
Some of the organisations we work closely with are:
His Majesty’s Inspectorate of Prisons
His Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire & Rescue Services
His Majesty’s Crown Prosecution Service Inspectorate
His Majesty’s Inspectorate of Probation
The Regulation and Quality Improvement Authority
The Education and Training Inspectorate
The Office of the Northern Ireland Commissioner for Children and Young People
The Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission
The Northern Ireland Audit Office.
Criminal Justice Inspection is funded by the Department of Justice for Northern Ireland, with the Chief Inspector appointed by the Minister of Justice.
As an independent Inspectorate, it must publish all reports and lay them before the Northern Ireland Assembly. While the Minister must grant permission for publication, they cannot alter report content unless it would compromise public interest or safety.
